Creating working jewels!
Keywords: single crystal, ceramics, piezoelectric materials, lithium-ion batteries, thermistors
Diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires... beautiful gemstones have captivated people since ancient times. These are not only used for jewelry; diamonds are utilized in polishing and cutting, rubies in lasers, and sapphires in blue LED substrates, demonstrating their industrial applications as well. We are conducting daily research with the aim of creating crystals that are useful to people (working gemstones). One example is high-temperature piezoelectric crystals, which can be used for safety management through non-destructive testing in geothermal and thermal power plants, environmental considerations via dust monitoring in chemical plants, and improving combustion efficiency through monitoring combustion pressure in automotive and marine engines. Currently, we have discovered melilite-type crystals as new materials and are working on scaling them up while evaluating their properties at high temperatures and designing and prototyping sensor structures. In addition to this theme, we are also engaged in the synthesis of solid electrolyte crystals that enable the all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries and the creation of microwave dielectrics for 6G communication.
